Section A — Comprehension (20 marks)
A 400-word unseen passage is provided in the full downloadable paper.
- What is the main idea of the passage? (4 marks)
- Explain the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph two, in your own words. (3 marks)
- Why does the author use short sentences in the final paragraph? (3 marks)
- Find one word from the passage that means "reluctant." (2 marks)
- Summarize the passage in no more than 60 words. (8 marks)
Section B — Grammar & usage (10 marks)
- Rewrite in reported speech: "I will finish the report by Friday," she said. (2 marks)
- Identify the error and correct it: "Neither of the boys have finished their homework." (2 marks)
- Combine into one sentence using an appropriate conjunction: "The sky was dark. It did not rain." (2 marks)
- Give the correct form of the verb: "By next year, she (complete) her degree." (2 marks)
- Punctuate: "the teacher asked have you submitted your assignment" (2 marks)
Section C — Composition (20 marks)
Write a composition of 250–300 words on one of the following:
- "Describe an experience that changed how you see the world."
- "Should school students be allowed to use phones in class? Argue your position."
Marks are awarded for structure and thesis clarity (8), development and evidence (8), and language and mechanics (4).
